Starting a Podcast

One day you wake up and think…

I should start a podcast!

Secret time… I actually don’t like writing blog posts. I know, surprising, right?! I’ve only been procrastinating writing a blog post about attending the historic plaster restoration workshop at the Belvedere School for Preservation since last September… so 7 months (at least). The problem is, I really want to be able to share my knowledge with a broader audience than just my clients, and I don’t mind talking as much as I mind writing. Then a fellow architect friend suggested I start a podcast, and it seemed like a natural fit.

Keeping rooms represent the greater idea that old houses have many forgotten things that can be explored, respected, and brought into modern life.

So, I roped my co-host, Jake Landry (an overqualified house husband, old house owner, DIY enthusiast, and good friend) into the idea and "The Keeping Room Podcast" was born. Named after keeping rooms (somewhat forgotten gathering spaces next to the kitchens, common in colonial homes, where people could chat, relax, and keep warm), the podcast is for old house enthusiasts who want to learn about all things related to these special homes. Together, Jake and I will explore topics like living though old house renovations, home maintenance, when to DIY and when to call in a pro, and specific projects like historic plaster restoration (finally!). I share my experience as an architect, preservationist, and old house owner, and Jake keeps me on track while sharing his own experiences and perspective.

As of now, we're only one episode in with another episode coming out this month, so it’s too early to say it's the best thing I've ever done, but I'm excited to explore all things old houses! The podcast will hopefully allow me to share my knowledge and passion for old houses with you all, in a way that feels natural and enjoyable to me. If you're someone who loves old houses, or just wants to learn more about them, I hope you'll tune in to our show. Grab a cup of tea (or whatever suits your fancy), and join us in "The Keeping Room" - we can't wait to share our old house obsessions with you.
